Best Book Review Guide is an independent book-review publication for readers who want more than a plot summary. We publish considered reviews, reading guides and literary recommendations that focus on what a book is trying to do, how well it succeeds and who is most likely to appreciate it.
What we cover
Our coverage spans contemporary fiction, literary fiction, mysteries and thrillers, translated literature and books from across Asia, including Singapore, Korea and Japan. We are especially interested in books that reward discussion: novels with distinctive voices, unusual structures, strong social observation or ideas that continue to resonate after the final page.
What makes our reviews different
A useful review should help you make a reading decision. That means we look beyond the synopsis. We consider the quality and character of the writing, pacing, structure, themes, character work and the overall reading experience. We also make room for criticism. A book can be worth reading while still having weaknesses, and our reviews are written with that distinction in mind.
Independence
Our editorial opinions are not sold. If a publisher, author or publicist provides a review copy or another material benefit connected to a piece of coverage, that relationship should be disclosed clearly in the article. Receiving a book does not guarantee coverage or a positive review.
For readers, first
This site is designed around readers rather than search engines or publishers. We want every article to answer a real question: Is this book worth your time? What kind of reader is it for? What should you expect from the writing and pacing? What else might you enjoy if it works for you?
You can read more about our standards in our Editorial Policy and How We Review Books pages.
